Just a few "golden nuggets" of info that I've mined from the internet.

http://pages.prodigy.net/jdjd/toc.htm http://pcusers.org/pctechy.html Jack Danniel's Web Site. This web site contains Plain English explanations and tutorials of many computer-related subjects.

http://www.voycabulary.com/ http://pcusers.org/pcfree.html Go to this site, enter an url or piece of text, select a dictionary, and each word at the URL or in the text is linked to a dictionary for a definition. Try the below url to the Techy page using the Computer dictionary. http://www.voycabulary.com/?texturl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pcusers.org/pctechy.html ------------------------------------------------------

Tip1:

If your Control Panel is cluttered with icons you don't need, clean it up. In the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, you'll find a corresponding CPL file for each Control Panel item. Move the ones you don't want to a safe place on your hard disk. When you open Control Panel, those icons won't appear

Tip2:

Many servers are closing down or powering down in the days just prior to the end of the year. They are doing this to head off any unknown Y2K problems that could cause their systems to crash. So don't blame lack of response or failure to respond directly on Y2K. They will probably be back up to full speed by the middle of the following week.

Rogers Corner: rtimai@mindspring.com

I use my computer fax capabilities two or three times a year, when I fax my sister in Honolulu, who doesn't know WordPerfect from Windows, and refuses to learn e-mail, but "does fax." I have been using Outlook to fax but the 2000 version was causing me problems that could only be fixed by a tedious 5 step process that included making changes in the registry.

I wanted to tell you this, so you would know what a relief it for me was when I found a web-based solution for people like me who don't "do fax" a lot. Check out:

http://pcusers.org/pcfree.html

Unlike many services, they offer both RECEIVE and SEND services, and their coverage doesn't seem to be limited to a handful of major metropolitan areas, like almost all other fax services I've checked out.

I joined and in a few minutes, sent a fax to Honolulu. It's only text-based,but it's no less than WinFax SE would have done either. I received e-mail confirmation in about five minutes that the fax went through.

Just in case you're interested in examining other FREE services, I've seen suggestions to visit http://www.free2fax.com or http://www.efax.com

Jack's Soapbox: jack.walleigh@home.net

Jack had his PC to crash on him after allowing Norton Anti-Virus to automatically update and "repair" his anti-virus signature file's. It appears that Norton "repaired" it with a signature file forWin/NT. How he got his PC up and running again will probably be a topic of discussion at our next meeting. He had to do it without assistance from Norton since of course they denied that it could of happened that way. Jack invoked the name of our Group and threatened untold damage to Norton's reputation. He was able to, Uh, accept a free gift of their newest version of the Norton program although they never admiited that it was their problem.
