3) Software Review (Microsoft Home Publishing Suite 2000)

by Jack Walleigh
Member of the 37211 PC Users Group

"Microsoft's Home Publishing Suite 2000 is considered to be the next level of personal home publishing. This sequel to the successful Home Publishing Suite 99 is absolutely jammed packed with features which are aimed right at today's consumer desktop, and photo based, web publisher. It takes a Swiss army knife approach to whatever publishing task you have in mind. If you've got a job, it's got the tool.

The first thing you notice when you take this program out of it's huge but descriptive box, is that it comes on no less than five CDs. Included on these disks are 3000 design templates, 8000 photos, and 30,000 clipart images of various formats, 155 fonts, plus web page integration tools and a slew of audio and animation effects; putting this suite in a league with some vastly more expensive products from vendors such as Corel, and others. Of course it might be good to have a fast and large hard drive with lots of available space to install all those items onto, because minimum HD requirements are 376 MB for minimum and 462 MB for a typical install.

Installation on my P-III 800 and Quantum Fireball hard drive went smooth as silk. Only the first two CDs were required for my typical installation. Disks #3, 4 and 5 contain additional art, sounds and the separate photo editor module. The only quirky requirement I encountered during the install was the need for Outlook Express to also be installed before allowing the program to start for the first time.

Like so many of the home oriented Microsoft products, Home Publishing Suite 2000 is heavily wizard oriented. Being in partnership with Hallmark for this suite, you can expect a tremendous range of excellent greeting card design and publishing capability as well a huge range of other tasks divided among the nine different project sections on the "Home Page". I say Home Page, because the whole program has a web page navigation look which is quite intuitive and easy to follow. Other well covered publishing tasks include newsletters, invitations, photo albums, calendars, posters, banners, advertising flyers, a very broad array of craft projects, and on and on. Most of these design projects, besides having paper output, also have a simple integration to your existing or build from scratch web pages. I liked the ability to add animations, photos and graphics to jazz up the look of your e-mail. Speaking of e-mail, with the direct link to Outlook Express, you can share projects with your co-designers wherever they may live through the direct web posting and e-mail integration, in a sense adding groupware capabilities to this suite.

You all know the first thing your family wants to do with that new Internet and e-mail access is swap photos of the new baby, or puppy, or just a great vacation photo. The new 2000 version of the suite also includes a limited version of Picture-It 2000 adding yet another Swiss army knife of photo editing tools to mix, crop, flip, rotate and even adjust the quality of your photos or add a wide range of effects. Of course it offers direct import of photos from any connected scanner or digital camera.

Between the Help Wizards at every step of design and creation, plus an integrated seamless link to the Microsoft Home Publishing web site, I can't imagine a home publishing task which wouldn't be improved and enhanced with the myriad of tools included with this program suite. On the down side, although the basic system requirements are on the low side, it does require a relatively large amount of hard drive space and even with that, unfortunately still demands some occasional CD swapping, depending on the task you are working on. With the amount of included clip art, animation & sound clips, and ready to use photos, on the five included CDs, that is to be somewhat expected.

There is already a follow-up in the pipeline for MS Home Publishing Suite 2000 based more closely on the Picture It! program, named Microsoft Picture It! Publishing Gold 2001, but if you see this version on the shelf (for an est street price $40 or less), it may be the publishing software bargain you have been searching for."

Server 54, Where Are You?

A Foreign Encounter with Microsoft
By Roger Imai "Here's something comical that happened to me at

http://support.microsoft.com/directory/content.asp

When you visit here, you'll see in your Address windows that a country ID is listed in the string. I pulled down the Worldwide Support menu in the sidebar to see what countries were listed, and accidentally highlighted Paraguay. I was instantly taken to that country's site, where I didn't understand any of the selections. The PROBLEM was I couldn't find UNITED STATES to re-select it! Oh no! I emptied the IE cache, shut down the browser and restarted, but when I visited the Support site, the Paraguayan site persisted! Oh NO! I finally recovered when I looked through my recent cookies (sorted by date) and deleted all the microsoft site cookies that were accessed today."
