XXcopy enhances the DOS command Xcopy with over 160 new switches. Full documentation is provided on how to use these switches. Some of XXcopy features are:

- Duplicates the entire system drive which can boot Win9x.
- Keeps the same short name (8.3) in the destination as in the source.
- Matches the long name to a file with short name only.
- The source specifier accepts wildcards in directory names also.
- Backs up directory incrementally without the use of archive bit.
- Synchronizes directories.
- Controls file attributes (keeps the source, destination attributes or none).
- Excludes directories or files from copying by wild cards.
- Qualifies files by file date/time (Before, On, or After).
- Deletes files or directories using the same powerful selection mechanism.
- Copies hidden/system files.
- Overwrites Read-only files
- Flattens a directory tree into files in one directory.

IFocus is a web browsing utility that enables you to clip and monitor the content of your favorite websites. You can load multiple Websites in multiple "always on top" windows, reposition and resize their content to view only the part you're interested in. Very useful for viewing up-to-the-minute content on websites while working in other applications.

ICANN: Launch of New Domain Names Behind Schedule. The new Web addresses that were to be open for registration by Internet users worldwide by July of this year, could be delayed by several months or more . VeriSign Inc. (VRSN), which currently oversees the database of the 28.2 million Web addresses ending in .com, .net and .org, agreed earlier this week to surrender the .net and .org master lists back to ICANN in order to keep longer-term control of the more lucrative .com database until at least 2007.

4) Search engines

http://www.metor.com
http://pcusers.org/pcreference.html#search
Metor is a new search and retrieval system that integrates information from hundreds of databases whose contents can not be reached by traditional search engines. Metor includes specialized databases, archives and catalogs for highly targeted information.

The default page is a fast metasearch engine that is going to one of my favorites. The page is very clean and the features are very easy to understand. Its keywords function that allows you to search for "all of the words", "any of the words" and "the exact phrase". It allows a metasearch using any combination of search engines including AltaVista, EuroSeek, Excite, FAST Search, Google, HotBot, Infoseek, Lycos, Northern Light, and WebCrawler. It also has a time-out function that shows results after 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds have elapsed.

I did a query using the 10 second mode, the exact phrase, and all of the search engines with a text string of "nashville pc users". It returned Roger's resume page in the 6th position!

Metor also allows metasearches of directories, reviewed websites, and specialized categories. Tech Info is a specailized category that allows you to metasearch the databases of publications such as, Byte, Computer Currents Interactive, IDG.net, InfoWorld, Internet Wire, Internet.com, NEWS.COM, PC World, TechWeb, The View, UPSIDE TODAY, Wired News and ZDNet. ----------------------------------------------------------------

The following problems have been posted to the Problems and Solutions Forum. If you have a PC related problem or solution, then please stop by and post it.

--- Problem #1 ---

I recieved the below request for help by e-mail and have posted it to the forum:

"I have a question for you or perhaps more than one question for you. Anyway here goes. How do I network two desktop computers? I want to be able to be on the internet with both machines at the same time surfing different places. I recently went to a computer show in town and talked to some sales guys there and they all told me that WIN 98 can network for you, and all I needed was the cabling, and two PCI network cards. They also wrote down what I needed to plug into the IP, mask and gateway fields. I took what they said to heart and came home and I tried to network my two PCs. To no avail, I can't figure out how to set up Windows 98 to allow both PCs to be on the net at the same time. I pulled up the windows help file. I read and tried to configure the network neighborhood like they said, and still nothing .

So, can you tell me if there is additional software that is needed, say Windows NT ver. XX, Netware or something that can be loaded so that I can tell the software which computer I want to be the server/ host and which one the client, and whatever else I need to get both computer online at the same time. Any info, links, URLS would be greatly appreciated."

--- Solution #1 ---

"Windows ME has a built in wizard that will set up networking on two computers for you that allows shared internet access. I believe you have to have ME on both machines for this to work.

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/sharing.htm You might try out this link on shared internet connections"

--- Problem #2 ---

"I have a problem with Windows Explorer. I am currently using Win98SE. I open Explorer and all appears normal, but as I move deeper into the sub-directories, the opening of each become slower and slower in displaying all of the folders and files. Also, when I click on a folder to open, it is high lighted in blue, then while the hour glass is up, it will re-high light the folder I just came from, and a couple of seconds later it will switch back to the one I selected and finally open up."

--- Problem #3 ---

"I am running a peer-to-peer network and I was looking for a way to timeout the log-on screen so that if no username/password is entered the machine completes boot as stand-alone (as though cancel button was pressed)."
