Batch File Bonanza. This is a selection of 84 free Reader-Written Batch File/DOS Tools compiled by Fred Langa at the Winmag.com. Some of the files are runnable as-is; you can download them, verify their contents using NotePad or a similar text editor, and then click to run. Others, especially the more complex ones, appear in plain text files you can copy, paste and edit (with NotePad or a similar text tool); save the edited file with a .BAT extension on your own system to make the file runnable. When you look at this page under the Registry Tools category you will find a batch file written by none other than our own contributing editor Roger Imai!

4) Tips:

This below tip is from the Iolo Inquisitor newsletter at http://www.iolo.com

This tip will show you how to assign sounds you find on the Internet or make yourself to Windows 98 system events. For example you can assign your favorite song to be played every time Windows starts up, or have the sound of glass breaking play when you get an error.

To assign your own sounds to a Windows event, perform these steps:

* Click your mouse on the Start menu Settings option and choose Control Panel. Windows 98, in turn, will open the Control Panel window.
* Within the Control Panel window, double-click your mouse on the Sounds icon. Windows 98 will display the Sounds Properties dialog box.
* Within the Sounds Properties dialog box Events field, click your mouse on the event to which you want to assign your own sound. Next, Click your mouse on the Browse button. Windows 98, in turn, will display the Browse dialog box.
* Within the Browse dialog box, locate your sound file and then click your mouse on the OK button.
* Within the Sounds Properties dialog box, assign sounds to other events as you desire and then click your mouse on the OK button to put your changes into effect.

The following tip is from the Smart Business E-Letter at http://www.zdnet.com/smartbusinessmag/

TIP OF THE DAY: PRIVATIZE YOUR ICQ CHATS

PROBLEM: You use ICQ 99b to chat with friends online. Unfortunately, chatty strangers can be a nuisance.

SOLUTION: You can do several things to reduce the number of folks who "seek you" to only a select few of your choosing.

First, double-click on the ICQ icon in your system tray if ICQ's main window isn't visible. Now click on the ICQ button on the main window (lower left corner), choose "Preferences & Security," then "Security & Privacy." On the Security tab, select "My authorization is required." Check "Do not publish IP address" and uncheck "Allow others to view my online presence on the World Wide Web." On the Ignore List tab, check "Accept messages only from users on my contact list" and click on the Save button. When prompted with "Checking this option will ignore all users who are not on your Contact List. Are you sure?" click on OK, then click on Done.
