Chipgeek Software. This site lists the essential software from around the web that you've just got to have if you are burning in a new computer system (Windows OS) , or need to know more about your processor or memory. A lot of the utilities listed are freeware.

Bugtoaster is a small application utility that sits silently in your systems tray and waits for an application to crash. When a crash is detected, boom, Bugtoaster has snagged it! The details of the crash are packaged up, and sent to the Bugtoaster database server where summaries of the crash can be viewed live on the Web.

The Geek Shopping Guide. Here's a decent looking vendor-rating site I found at geek.com. They are now featuring a Shopping Guide which looks pretty good. To me they look at least as good, if not better, than the rating system that C/Net uses.

2) Not-so-free software and services:

Drive ImageŽ 4.0 adds CD-R and CD-R/W Support and continuous data backup. The ability to save images directly to CD-R and CD-R/W extends options for storing an image file. Drive Image will estimate the size of the image file to ensure adequate disk space or removable media for the backup. Images can be spanned across multiple CD-R/W disks. With the addition of PowerQuest DataKeeper, users can now combine hard drive imaging with continuous data monitoring. PowerQuest DataKeeper continuously monitors file activity in the background and supports compressed backups on the fly. Once a user configures the program, backups will be created automatically each time a file is modified. This allows users to have incremental versions of documents between complete system images or backups, adding another layer of protection to the user's data.

I saw a contractor out measuring the streets in my neighborhood here in Nashville, TN, for a new cable service called Digital Access. According to them they will offer residential customers a single service combining telephone, data transmission/Internet access, and video, in any combination they choose. It's about time Intermedia got some competition. Hopefully this will mean lower prices and better service for all.

Roger Recommends:

"AllBooks4Less is a big resource for clearance books, audiocassette books, and software, kind of like a bargain-basement for Amazon.com -- except Amazon doesn't have one. The offerings in some areas are so numerous that it's a pain to have to page through all of them, instead of browsing a single text-based list like on Amazon, but it can be a great source for bargains, especially if you know what you're looking for, and use their keyword search engine.

For book lovers (I also know a couple of friends who buy a LOT of audio books to listen to while commuting,) especially fiction, there are a lot of real deep discounts. The software selection is so-so, mostly obscure, or kids' educational titles. But the books and audio section is pretty awesome. I still haven't gone through all the selections yet. Some of the book-plus-CD selections in the Computer Books section are more valuable than what you can find in the Software section, and, at up to 90% off!

I registered, since I'm planning to purchase here, and registration puts you on the mailing list to receive special freebie offers, etc."

5) Tips:

http://pcusers.org/pcebiz.html#articles
The below tips are from the Windows 98 Tipworld newsletter:

CONFIGURING YOUR COMPUTER'S SPEAKER ARRANGEMENT
Today's computers can render surround sound with all sorts of games and DVD movies. If you have the proper speaker setup, you can experience these multimedia works in all their glory, hearing sounds both in front and behind. You will, however, need to set Windows 98 so that it works with your Surround Sound speakers. Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel and open the Multimedia icon. Click the Audio tab and then click Advanced Properties in the Playback section. From the drop-down menu, select the Speaker Setup that corresponds to your system, and then click OK.

TRANSFERRING DIAL-UP INFORMATION
Entering all your Dial-Up Networking settings for your Internet connection takes a while, and repeating the same information on more than one computer is a waste of time. If you regularly use more than one computer to connect to the Internet, you should know that you don't have to enter all the information twice. You can transfer the Dial-Up Networking (DUN) settings stored in your Dial-Up Networking folder to another computer. (To access the Dial-Up Networking folder, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, Communications, Dial-Up Networking.) Simply drag the icon for the setting you wish to transfer to a floppy disk, or, if your computers are networked, drop it onto the other computer's desktop. You'll need to do two things to make sure this works: First, you'll need to re-enter your user name and password information on the other computer. (Make sure you have the opportunity to do this by enabling the prompt for user name and password. Go to Start, Programs, Accessories, Communications, Dial-Up Networking. Then go to Connections, Settings and check the Prompt For Information Before Dialing box.) Second, you'll need to select the other computer's modem for the connection by right-clicking the connection, selecting Properties, and then selecting the modem from the Connect Using drop-down menu.

ENABLING TOGGLE KEYS
Everyone knows how frustrating it can be when you're typing furiously while looking away from the screen, and you accidentally push the Caps Lock key. Having to back up and retype that sentence or two can be a real time waster. A setting in Microsoft's Accessibility Options lets you know Caps Lock has been engaged by sounding a tone. It's called Toggle Keys.
